Leading with a Growth Mindset in the Age of AI

"AI is exciting, but it's also overwhelming." I'm hearing this from people everywhere. And I very much understand where they’re coming from.. While I love using some AI tools and apps - they've certainly made my life and work easier and faster, I’m wondering about what’s still to come.

When faced with AI, leaders typically fall into one of two camps:

1. Those with a scarcity mindset see threat - jobs lost, skills becoming obsolete, people left behind.
2. Those with a growth mindset see opportunity - new capabilities to develop, problems to solve differently, human potential to unlock.

73% of employees worry AI will replace their jobs, yet only 32% of organisations are actively helping people develop the skills to work alongside AI (PWC Future of Work Survey, 2024). The technology advances at lightning speed, but here's what often gets missed: how we frame these changes in our minds.

Think about your last major change initiative in your team. The people who adapted quickest weren't necessarily the most tech-savvy. They were the ones who approached change with curiosity rather than fear, who saw learning opportunities instead of limitations.

As someone making decisions about your organisation's future, the real challenge isn't always the technology itself, it's helping your people shift from "What will this take away?" to "What will this make possible?"

This mindset shift doesn't happen automatically. It requires intentional leadership that models growth thinking, celebrates learning over perfection, and helps teams reframe challenges as opportunities to expand.

Coaching questions for reflection:

- How am I talking about AI and change with my team?
- Am I unconsciously reinforcing scarcity or growth thinking?
- Where do I see growth mindset behaviours in my organisation, and how can I amplify them?
- What would it look like to celebrate "productive failures" as learning opportunities?
- How can I help my team see their existing skills as building blocks rather than limitations?
- When someone says "I'm not good with technology," how do I respond?
- What stories am I telling about our organisation's future? Are they growth-focused or fear-based?

In the age of AI, it’s not resistance to change that sets organisations apart, but the ability to embrace it with intention, skill, and a growth mindset.
